The Sindh Assembly was informed that the provincial government has intensified its crackdown on unfit vehicles, issuing fines worth Rs. 820 million to more than 56,000 heavy vehicles over the past year. The action forms part of broader efforts to improve road safety and regulate commercial transport across the province. Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon, who also holds the transport portfolio, shared the details during the Question Hour while responding to queries from lawmakers. He stated that challans were issued to thousands of vehicles, including dumpers, oil tankers, tractors, trailers, trucks, and water tankers found operating without proper fitness standards. The minister explained that fitness certificates were previously issued manually, often without proper documentation, allowing vehicles from other provinces to obtain certification in Sindh. He said the system has now been fully computerized, making digital fitness certificates mandatory for all vehicles operating on provincial roads. Sharjeel Memon also informed the assembly that the Sindh government is expanding its public transport fleet, with several new buses already at the port and approval granted for an additional 500 buses. He noted that government-run buses are currently used by around 200,000 passengers daily, while ridership on the Green Line has increased significantly from 50,000 to 85,000 passengers. Go back |
