Pakistan and South Korea have announced a joint initiative to establish a high-tech Seed Potato Production and Supply Centre (SPPSC) in Islamabad, designed to reduce the country’s reliance on imported seed potatoes. The project is being facilitated by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and will incorporate advanced technologies such as aeroponics, tissue culture, and modern cold-chain systems to ensure high-quality seed production.

The centre is expected to increase potato productivity by up to 20 percent and supply virus-free, certified seed to more than 100,000 farmers across Pakistan. Beyond production, the initiative will provide extensive training, improve postharvest management, and strengthen institutional capacity within the potato sector.

Officials highlighted that the SPPSC will play a crucial role in enhancing national food security, increasing rural incomes, and modernizing Pakistan’s potato industry. By introducing cutting-edge cultivation techniques and quality control measures, the project aims to transform the country’s seed potato supply chain, making it more efficient, sustainable, and self-reliant.
