Bangladesh has officially decided to procure 20 J-10 fighter jets from China, following the strong performance of these Chinese-made aircraft operated by Pakistani pilots during the recent conflict between Pakistan and India. The multibillion-dollar defense agreement highlights Bangladesh’s growing interest in upgrading its air force capabilities with modern, multirole combat aircraft.

The deal, reportedly worth around $2.2 billion, goes beyond just the aircraft. It includes comprehensive support, such as pilot and technical training, maintenance services, logistics infrastructure, and other operational essentials to ensure the long-term readiness and integration of the J-10s into Bangladesh's air fleet.

Each J-10 aircraft carries a price tag of approximately $60 million, making the cost of the 20-fighter fleet roughly $1.2 billion. The remaining $820 million is allocated for support elements, including transportation, specialized equipment, and additional operational needs. The entire package is structured to be paid over a 10-year period through 36 installments, easing the financial burden on Bangladesh while ensuring sustained progress in its air force modernization.

The aircraft are expected to be delivered and fully inducted into the Bangladesh Air Force by 2027, potentially enhancing the country’s regional air defense capabilities and shifting the strategic balance in South Asia.
