KU Directed to Implement Open-Merit Admissions Based on Sindh Domicile

The committee has issued a directive to Karachi University to implement an admissions policy that strictly follows an open-merit system, with eligibility limited exclusively to candidates holding a Sindh domicile. This means that all admissions will now be determined solely on academic performance, without the consideration of quotas, special categories, or regional allocations from outside Sindh. Under this system, students will be ranked according to their merit scores, such as entry test results, matriculation and intermediate marks, or other relevant academic criteria, and admissions will be granted in order of merit.

The move is aimed at ensuring a fair and transparent selection process that prioritizes the students of Sindh, giving local candidates the maximum opportunity to access higher education at Karachi University. By emphasizing domicile-based eligibility, the policy seeks to address concerns over previous admissions practices where non-local students may have occupied a portion of seats through regional quotas.

University officials have been instructed to update their admission procedures, online portals, and application forms to reflect the new open-merit system. The committee also highlighted the importance of public awareness, urging Karachi University to clearly communicate the revised criteria to all prospective applicants and to monitor the implementation closely to prevent any deviations.

Experts suggest that this policy could lead to increased competition among Sindh-based students, improve academic standards, and provide a more merit-driven environment in higher education. It also aligns with broader provincial goals of empowering local students and enhancing access to quality education within the province.
