Health Experts Warn Against Consuming Fried and Sugary Foods During Ramadan

Health experts have advised citizens to avoid excessive consumption of fried foods and sugary drinks during sehri and iftar in Ramadan, warning that unhealthy eating habits can lead to heartburn, acidity, and other digestive issues. Dr. Rimsha Siddiqui, a nutritionist at Aga Khan University Hospital, emphasized that individuals with diabetes, hypertension, or heart conditions should consult their physicians before fasting and take precautionary measures to prevent complications during the holy month.

Dr. Siddiqui recommended not skipping sehri, as the pre-dawn meal is essential for maintaining energy levels throughout the day. She suggested including fiber-rich foods such as whole wheat flour, barley, porridge, and brown bread, alongside protein sources like eggs, meat, and lentils, noting that fiber helps stabilize blood sugar levels during fasting hours.

For iftar, experts advise limiting sugary beverages and reducing sugar, jaggery, and honey intake while increasing water consumption and avoiding excessive fried foods to prevent digestive discomfort. Healthier iftar options include fruits, vegetables, kebabs, and home-cooked dishes such as haleem or porridge. Individuals with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or diabetes are encouraged to reduce beef consumption and choose lean meats instead. Mutton may be eaten in moderation three to four times per week, while eggs and lentils serve as nutritious protein alternatives, supporting overall health during Ramadan fasting.
