The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a warning that mobile SIM cards that remain inactive for six months will be blocked. Telecom operators are authorized to deactivate SIMs that have not recorded any calls, SMS, or internet usage for 180 consecutive days. Once a SIM is blocked due to inactivity, the number may be reissued to another user, and the previous subscriber will have no legal claim over it. PTA has advised mobile users to use their SIM cards regularly to prevent deactivation and possible reassignment of their numbers. To support overseas Pakistanis, PTA has launched a program allowing citizens abroad to keep their SIM cards active and secure during their stay outside Pakistan. Subscribers can protect their numbers for a specific period by notifying their cellular company and paying applicable charges. This ensures uninterrupted access to telecom services and helps users stay connected with family and friends in Pakistan. Prepaid users are advised to make at least one call, send an SMS, or use mobile data every 180 days to maintain SIM activity. Postpaid customers should pay monthly line rent and any outstanding dues on time. PTA has also cautioned consumers about fake calls and UAN numbers, warning that scammers are impersonating PTA, FIA, and banks. The authority emphasized that no government organization will ever ask for OTPs, PINs, identity card numbers, or biometrics and urged consumers to verify information only through official government channels.
