Iran sets conditions to reopen Strait of Hormuz, complicating transit deal

Iran has laid out preconditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, among them compensation for war damages, adding new complications to efforts to restore traffic through the globally vital waterway.

Tehran has effectively blockaded the strait since US and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, and now wants to levy tolls on passing vessels while targeting ships it accuses of bypassing its preferred route.

Continued attacks led to the collapse of an April ceasefire; mediators have urged both sides back to the terms of a June memorandum. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks with Oman on the arrangements were ongoing.
