Transgender students in Sindh will be able to access scholarships for higher education through the Sindh Education Endowment Fund, after the provincial government agreed to widen educational opportunities for the community, ProPakistani has learned.

The decision was taken during a meeting between Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah and a delegation of transgender representatives that included Karachi Metropolitan Corporation councillor and provincial focal person for the transgender community Shahzadi Rai, along with Zahrish Khanzadi and Kami Chaudhry. Discussions centred on the barriers transgender individuals face in pursuing education and on steps to bring them more fully into the mainstream education system.

According to officials, the minister agreed to finalize a comprehensive transgender education policy in consultation with community representatives, who will also be involved in the approval process so that their concerns are reflected in the final framework. The minister noted that the provincial government's existing recruitment rules already provide a job quota for transgender people, and said members of the community can also serve as teachers once they complete the required academic and professional qualifications.

Shah stressed that access to education and employment should be equal for all citizens, and that transgender individuals should be able to build academic and professional careers without facing discrimination or social barriers. He also called for greater public awareness, respect and acceptance of the community to support its meaningful inclusion in society.

The move builds on earlier provincial efforts to improve representation of transgender people in public institutions. The planned policy is expected to set out how scholarships, admissions and teacher recruitment will be handled for the community across Sindh.

Details on eligibility criteria and the application process for the endowment fund scholarships are expected to be announced once the policy is finalized. Students and community representatives have been advised to watch for further official notifications from the education department.
