PMD Warns of Severe Smog and Rising Air Pollution Across Punjab Cities This Winter

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued an advisory warning of a significant increase in smog levels across major cities during the upcoming winter season. The rise in smog is expected to occur due to persistent dry and stable weather conditions, with the phenomenon typically intensifying between November and mid-December.

According to the department, the buildup of smog will be driven by a mix of industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and stagnant air, which together trap fine particulate matter near the ground. This is likely to result in a further decline in air quality, particularly in cities such as Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, and several other regions of Punjab.

The deteriorating air conditions are expected to cause an increase in respiratory ailments, asthma attacks, and other pollution-related health problems. Children, senior citizens, and individuals with preexisting health conditions are considered most at risk. In addition to health impacts, the PMD has warned that reduced visibility from dense smog could lead to more frequent road accidents and interruptions to outdoor and transport activities.

Authorities are urging the public to limit unnecessary outdoor exposure, use protective masks, and adopt measures to reduce pollution sources as smog conditions worsen in the coming weeks.
