Rawalpindi’s ongoing infrastructure development is set to expand significantly, with authorities preparing to construct three new underpasses by late November or early December. These underpasses are planned for key locations on Peshawar Road, including Qasim Market, Race Course, and Cheering Cross, as part of the city’s broader effort to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
The new works are an extension of the Rs. 14 billion Kachehri Chowk project, which also includes three flyovers, three underpasses, and road-widening initiatives. Officials have confirmed that both the main Kachehri Chowk project and the newly approved underpasses aim for completion by June 2026. Once finished, the signal-free corridor connecting Kachehri Chowk to Motorway Chowk is expected to be operational by June or July, offering uninterrupted travel across this critical route.
The Communications and Works (C&W) Department is supervising the project, while the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) serves as the contractor. Construction is ongoing around the clock to minimize disruption in a zone that links several major roads, including Jinnah Park Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Iftikhar Janjua Road, Mall Road, and Jhelum Road.
Following the completion of underpasses at TM Chowk and GPO Chowk, authorities received bids from contractors for the new Rs. 7.2 billion underpass package. Tenders are scheduled to be opened this week, after which contracts will be awarded.
According to C&W officials, the plan is to carry out construction of the three new underpasses concurrently with the Kachehri Chowk project, ensuring all works are completed within the same eight-month timeline. This expansion is expected to drastically improve traffic management and provide long-term relief to commuters in one of Rawalpindi’s busiest areas.
