The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has unveiled a major plan to rehabilitate over 26 key streets across the city, aiming to ease traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility in Pakistan’s largest metropolis. The proposed initiative, valued at Rs9 billion, is set to be submitted for approval under the Special Karachi Development Grant from the provincial government.

A high-level meeting was held at the KMC Head Office, chaired by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, with top officials including Secretary Local Government Waseem Shamshad, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi, Municipal Commissioner Syed Afzal Zaidi, Special Secretary Local Government Azhar Shah, Financial Advisor Gulzar Abro, Senior Director Coordination Ikhlaq Yousafzai, and Director Media Daniyal Siyal in attendance.

During the session, officials conducted a thorough review of ongoing development schemes and urban improvement programs, highlighting the need for street upgrades to improve traffic flow, reduce travel times, and enhance safety for commuters. The plan focuses on modernizing road surfaces, improving drainage, and integrating better traffic management solutions, ensuring smoother movement across critical city arteries.

If approved, this street rehabilitation project is expected to significantly reduce congestion in densely trafficked areas, boost economic activity by improving connectivity, and provide residents with a safer, more efficient urban transport environment. The initiative reflects KMC’s commitment to sustainable city planning and improving the daily commuting experience for Karachi’s millions of residents.
