CM Maryam Nawaz Launches Province-Wide Colored Dustbin System to Modernize Waste Management in Punjab

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched a province-wide initiative to improve waste management by directing the installation of colour-coded dustbins in markets, shopping malls, commercial centres, government offices, and educational institutions. This step is part of the Smart Waste Management Process, which began its first phase last year after receiving approval for implementation in both public and private educational institutions across Punjab.

The new system introduces a structured method for waste segregation at the source, helping improve recycling efficiency and reduce environmental pollution. Each dustbin colour represents a specific waste category. Yellow bins are designated for paper, cardboard, packaging materials, and other dry waste. Green bins are meant for bottles, glass pieces, and laboratory-related waste. Purple or grey bins are used for organic material such as fruit peels, leftover food, leaves, and spoiled vegetables. Red bins are assigned for iron waste and other metals. Orange bins are reserved for plastic waste, including bottles and packaging items.

Officials believe this organised approach will help enhance cleanliness, reduce the burden on landfills, and promote responsible disposal practices across Punjab. The government also plans to expand the system to more districts and create awareness campaigns to help the public understand proper waste segregation. Environmental experts have praised the initiative, noting that it is an important step toward sustainable waste management and a cleaner urban environment in the province.
