From Mai Kolachi to Karachi: A Journey Through History

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, traces its origins back to the 1700s when it was known as Kolachi, named after Mai Kolachi, a fisherwoman who established a small coastal settlement. Her village, Kolachi-jo-Goth, gradually evolved into a bustling trading port, laying the foundation for the modern city.

The city’s historical fort included gates such as Kharadar and Mithadar, which have preserved elements of its rich heritage. Before the Kolachi settlement, the region was identified by ancient Greeks and Arabs as Krokola, Morontobara, Barbarikon, and Debal, reflecting its long-standing significance as a center of trade and maritime activity. Today, localities like Mai Kolachi continue to honor the city’s origins and celebrate its maritime and cultural history.
