The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has issued a New Year alert, warning citizens of a surge in online scams and fraudulent activities during year-end celebrations. In its advisory, the agency highlighted that cybercriminals are increasingly targeting users through fake links, messages, and New Year-themed offers designed to deceive unsuspecting individuals. Fraudsters are reportedly circulating bogus messages promising gifts, rewards, or special offers to lure users into sharing personal or financial information. The NCCIA cautioned the public not to click on suspicious links or disclose sensitive data online, emphasizing that increased digital activity during the holiday season provides more opportunities for scammers to exploit users. The agency also shared emergency protocols for recovering hacked WhatsApp accounts amid a rise in account takeovers. Users who suspect unauthorized access are advised to immediately uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp, then re-register with their phone number. During re-registration, WhatsApp sends a six-digit verification code via SMS, which logs out any hacker currently accessing the account, as only one active session is allowed per account. If hackers have enabled two-step verification, users may need to wait up to seven days before regaining full access. The NCCIA reassured the public that messages remain secure and inaccessible during this period. Authorities urged citizens to remain vigilant, adhere to cybersecurity best practices, and promptly report any suspicious online activity to prevent financial loss, identity theft, and other cybercrimes during the New Year celebrations.
