The government has announced the regulated celebration of Basant 2026 in Lahore, allowing the manufacture of kites and strings from December 30. The sale of kite-flying materials will be permitted only from February 1 to February 8 under strict safety regulations.

Deputy Commissioner Lahore Syed Musa Raza issued a notification authorizing Basant festivities on February 6, 7, and 8 within Lahore’s district limits, with kite flying allowed under controlled conditions. The measures aim to prevent accidents and protect lives during the festival. Authorities have activated the e-Biz app and an online portal for digital registration of kite and string manufacturers and sellers.

The production and sale of spools, known as charkhis, remain completely banned. Only kite string in the form of a “pana” is permitted, with nylon, plastic, or metallic-coated strings strictly prohibited. A zero-tolerance policy will be enforced for violations. Additional safety measures include mandatory protective wires on motorcycles to prevent injuries from stray strings, and kite sizes will be restricted. Police and district officials have been instructed to take strict action against banned materials and unsafe practices.

Deputy Commissioner Raza emphasized that Basant is a cultural festival and that ensuring public safety is the administration’s responsibility. Parents have been urged to prevent children from using prohibited strings, while law-abiding participants will be fully protected.

Lahore’s traditional kites feature a variety of shapes and styles, including Gudda, Guddi, Patang, Kup, Pari, Lucknow Kat, Tukkal, Do-Akhal, Lepo, Rocket, Parphara, Teerah, Machhar, Silai Marka, Dabbidar, and Pappardan. These kites are crafted with intricate designs and vibrant paper panels, reflecting Lahore’s rich cultural heritage.

With strict regulations and enhanced safety measures, Basant 2026 in Lahore is expected to be a safer and culturally vibrant celebration, allowing kite enthusiasts to enjoy the festival responsibly.
