Pakistan has officially operationalized its first Hong Kong International Convention (HKC)-certified ship recycling facility, the Prime Green Recycling Yard, marking a significant milestone for the country’s shipbreaking industry. The certification ensures that the facility meets international standards for environmental protection, hazardous waste management, and worker safety, addressing longstanding concerns over unsafe and environmentally harmful practices in the sector.

The HKC certification, issued under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) framework, represents a major structural shift, signaling Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing its ship recycling practices. Experts say this step not only improves safety and environmental compliance but also enhances the country’s credibility in the global ship recycling market, which increasingly favors responsible and sustainable operations.

Government officials have announced plans to upgrade additional facilities across the region, aiming to expand HKC certification and establish Pakistan as a competitive and environmentally responsible hub for ship recycling. These measures are expected to attract international clients, encourage investment, and promote safer working conditions, while reducing the environmental impact of the industry that has historically been criticized for hazardous practices and poor regulatory oversight.
