Karachi to Launch Advanced Water Supply System to Improve Access and Efficiency

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has announced the discontinuation of water supply through tankers and hydrants in the city. During a meeting, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab instructed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation to implement an alternative water distribution system using pipelines. He also ordered the phased closure of all seven operational hydrants.

Water will now be delivered to residents via pipeline connections, with officials tasked to arrange doorstep supply through proper lines. The mayor noted that the city previously earned approximately Rs. 300 million per month from hydrant operations, but contracts for these hydrants expired last year and will not be renewed.

Until the pipeline system is fully operational, water supply will be managed on alternate days in different areas to ensure residents continue receiving access. The move aims to modernize Karachi’s water distribution and reduce reliance on tankers and temporary hydrant setups.
