SSGC Announces One-Day Industrial Gas Shutdown in Karachi: Supply Update and Impact

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) is evaluating a one-day industrial gas shutdown in Karachi to manage domestic gas shortages, particularly during the winter season when household demand spikes. The proposed suspension aims to ensure uninterrupted gas supply for homes, allowing residents to continue heating, cooking, and meeting essential energy needs.

The decision comes in response to recent gas shortages affecting both households and businesses. SSGC officials explained that domestic gas consumption rises sharply in colder months, and temporarily restricting industrial gas use helps stabilize supply for residential users. Recent improvements, such as the restoration of 25 to 30 million cubic feet per day from local gas wells, have eased pressure on the network, but winter demand continues to challenge the system.

Industrial consumers may experience temporary supply disruptions if the shutdown is implemented. Companies relying on natural gas for production and operations will need to adjust schedules to minimize downtime. Despite short-term inconvenience for industries, the move prioritizes household energy security and helps prevent prolonged domestic shortages.

In regulatory updates, the federal government has confirmed that gas tariffs will remain unchanged for the next six months, reducing concerns over rising household energy costs. Meanwhile, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has increased the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to Rs219.67 per kilogram, reflecting market trends while keeping household gas affordable.

During winter, domestic gas consumption increases for heating, water heating, and cooking. SSGC’s seasonal management strategy, including the potential one-day industrial shutdown, is designed to maintain a reliable and consistent supply for essential household needs. Residents are advised to use gas responsibly, monitor updates from SSGC, and report any disruptions.

This proactive measure highlights SSGC’s focus on energy stability and household welfare, balancing industrial requirements with the priority of uninterrupted domestic gas supply in Karachi during peak winter demand.
