The Sindh government has approved a major development package to repair and rehabilitate 409 roads across Karachi, aiming to improve traffic flow, public safety, and daily travel for millions of residents. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah sanctioned a total development package of Rs. 21.53 billion, including Rs. 13 billion specifically allocated for road rehabilitation works. Many roads in Karachi, managed by the 24 Town Municipal Corporations, had deteriorated due to budget constraints, making repairs impossible without provincial support. The project identifies severely damaged roads causing traffic jams, accidents, and commuter problems. Most roads will receive patchwork repairs, filling potholes and resurfacing roads with strong foundations, while nine critically damaged roads will undergo full reconstruction with new base layers and surfacing. This dual approach ensures proper repairs while controlling costs. The total cost for road rehabilitation is Rs. 10.93 billion, with an additional Rs. 1.64 billion allocated for water and sewerage work, addressing underground pipeline issues before resurfacing to prevent future damage. The final road-related cost comes to Rs. 12.57 billion. District-wise, Malir has the highest number of damaged roads at 98, followed by West with 81, Central 53, South 50, East 49, Korangi 39, and Keamari 39. Some districts, such as Keamari, West, and East, require larger budgets due to longer roads and higher damage levels, with costs of Rs. 2.32 billion, Rs. 2.31 billion, and Rs. 1.85 billion respectively. The 24 TMCs will manage planning, execution, and monitoring within their areas, with major allocations to Manghopir (Rs. 1.75 billion), Gadap (Rs. 960 million), Baldia (Rs. 944 million), and Mauripur (Rs. 858 million). Selected areas including Gulberg, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Sohrab Goth, Orangi, Manghopir, Saddar, and Landhi will undergo full rehabilitation to ensure long-term durability. The road repair project will benefit Karachi residents by improving traffic flow, reducing vehicle damage, enhancing drainage systems, increasing pedestrian safety, and allowing faster emergency responses. The government emphasizes infrastructure development as a priority, coordinating road repairs with water and sewerage improvements to prevent recurring damage. The Chief Minister has mandated regular monitoring, proper fund utilization, and strict TMC accountability for quality and timely completion. With Rs. 13 billion approved for repairing 409 roads, this initiative is expected to significantly improve Karachi’s road network and provide lasting relief to daily commuters. Go back |
