The Government of Pakistan has introduced a new initiative allowing all citizens aged 18 and above to obtain their first Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) completely free of charge. Eligible individuals can visit any National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) center, complete the registration process, and receive their CNIC within 15 days of application. This move aims to make identity registration more accessible by removing financial and administrative hurdles, particularly for young adults applying for their first national ID. With a valid CNIC, citizens can open bank accounts, obtain mobile SIM cards, apply for passports, access government welfare programs, and register to vote—making it a crucial document for social and economic participation. Although the first CNIC is now free, NADRA has revised its fee structure for renewals and Smart NICs, offering applicants multiple processing options such as normal, urgent, and executive services to suit different needs and timelines. The government’s decision reflects its broader goal of improving digital inclusion and civic participation across Pakistan. Go back |
