The Lahore Traffic Police have ramped up their campaign against vehicular pollution in response to the city’s worsening smog crisis. Special enforcement teams have been deployed at all major entry and exit points to intercept unfit and smoke-emitting vehicles, preventing them from entering Lahore.

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Dr. Athar Waheed announced that vehicles without valid fitness certificates are now strictly barred from entering the city as part of the government’s comprehensive anti-smog strategy. He said the initiative aims to control vehicular emissions and improve overall air quality in one of the most polluted urban centers in the world.

According to official data, authorities took action during October against 24,591 vehicles found operating without fitness certificates. More than 17,000 smoke-emitting vehicles and 8,000 unsafe trolleys carrying sand or dirt were fined during the same period. Dr. Waheed noted that enforcement efforts have increased fourfold compared to October last year, underscoring the department’s intensified focus on pollution control and public health.

The CTO urged vehicle owners to carry out regular maintenance and necessary repairs to minimize smoke emissions. He also warned that stricter inspections and penalties will continue in the coming weeks, emphasizing that curbing smog requires collective responsibility from both citizens and enforcement authorities.

Lahore has consistently ranked among the world’s most polluted cities, particularly during the winter months when smog levels peak. The ongoing crackdown is part of broader measures to mitigate environmental degradation and protect public health as the city braces for another severe smog season.
