3 78

The Caltech Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship 2026 in the USA offers a unique opportunity for undergraduate students, both US citizens and international applicants, to gain hands-on research experience under the mentorship of leading experts. This fully paid ten-week fellowship allows students to engage in advanced research projects across a range of scientific and engineering disciplines. Participants work closely with faculty mentors to design and execute research projects, write proposals, and develop practical skills in a collaborative, professional environment.

The fellowship provides a stipend of $8,110 for the ten-week period, helping students focus on research without financial concerns. SURF fellows attend weekly seminars led by Caltech faculty and JPL scientists, participate in academic and professional development sessions, and take part in communication workshops, small student-faculty dinners, and cultural and social events. At the end of the program, fellows present their research findings at the SURF Seminar Days, gaining experience in formal scientific presentations and report writing, which prepares them for graduate studies and research careers.

Eligibility for Caltech students requires undergraduate enrollment, completion of at least the third term, a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, eligibility for fall term registration, and no academic or disciplinary sanctions. Visiting undergraduate students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, complete the second semester or third quarter at their current university, be eligible for fall term registration, and have no academic or disciplinary sanctions. International students must also meet additional institutional requirements.

To apply, students must first contact a research mentor to develop a project and draft a research proposal. The application package includes an online application, a research proposal, an unofficial transcript for non-Caltech applicants, and two letters of recommendation, all submitted through the SURF Online system. Awards are announced on April 1, 2026.

The Caltech Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship 2026 provides a fully immersive research experience in the USA, helping undergraduate students enhance their research capabilities, build professional networks, and prepare for advanced academic and career opportunities. The application deadline is February 22, 2026.
