Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has advised Shadab Khan to respond to criticism with strong performances rather than statements, following the all-rounder’s recent comment suggesting former players “didn’t do what we’ve done.” Afridi acknowledged that Shadab was justified in defending his team’s achievements but stressed that the squad struggled to manage the respect and pressure after their historic win over India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.
Afridi explained that failing to handle that respect led to difficulties in managing internal issues both individually and as a team. He reminded Shadab that he was among the former cricketers who had publicly supported him during periods of poor form and when he was out of the team, emphasizing Shadab’s value as a versatile player. Afridi noted that he and other former players often highlighted Shadab’s importance, calling him the backbone of the team and praising his batting and bowling contributions.
While praising Shadab’s respectful demeanor, Afridi encouraged him to let his performances speak for themselves. He reflected on his own career, recalling that he faced heavy criticism from former players but chose to respond through performances, particularly against strong teams rather than weaker opponents.
Afridi urged Shadab to continue performing, including in upcoming matches against New Zealand, reminding him of his strong showing against Namibia. He highlighted that Shadab entered the national team without domestic cricket experience but still earned the support of senior players. Afridi concluded by advising Shadab to focus on his game and silence critics through consistent performances.
