The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced plans to upgrade Abbottabad and Muzaffarabad stadiums, marking a significant step toward developing cricket infrastructure in northern Pakistan. Both venues have long supported domestic competitions but have never hosted an international match or a Pakistan Super League (PSL) fixture. PCB officials are currently discussing modernization plans to bring these stadiums up to international standards. Islamabad is also slated to receive a brand-new international-standard stadium within a year, while Karachi’s National Bank Stadium will undergo renovations after the next PSL season. Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, located over 1,200 metres above sea level, is celebrated for its scenic surroundings, with former cricketer Wasim Akram calling it “the most beautiful stadium in the world.” The venue has hosted First-Class and List-A tournaments, including Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches, and served as Pakistan’s training base before the 2013 Champions Trophy due to its conditions resembling those in England. Despite its charm and utility, it has yet to host international fixtures or PSL games. Muzaffarabad Cricket Stadium, also known locally as Narol Cricket Stadium (MCS), has been the home of the Kashmir Premier League since its inception. Beyond cricket, the stadium has played a vital community role, notably being converted into a hospital during major earthquakes. It has hosted numerous Under-19 and senior inter-district tournaments but remains absent from Pakistan’s official list of international venues. Upgrading both Abbottabad and Muzaffarabad stadiums is expected to enhance cricket development in the northern regions, provide world-class facilities for players, and increase the potential for hosting major international matches and tournaments in the future.
