Artificial Intelligence has officially stepped onto the cricket field as the ICC introduced AI-powered pitch reporting using Google’s Gemini tool during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. In a historic moment ahead of the tenth match, former India captain Mithali Raj demonstrated how AI is now part of the game’s pre-match analysis.

Using the Gemini Live feature on her phone, Mithali showed the pitch at ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam and asked the AI tool for its assessment. The prompt was simple but insightful: “We are at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam for a One Day International. The weather is hot and humid. What do you think about this pitch?” Gemini quickly analyzed the visual data and offered a breakdown — the pitch appeared smooth, had minimal grass, and under the current conditions, was likely to favor batters due to limited swing potential.

Mithali Raj confirmed the AI’s read, noting that the surface did look good for batting and predicting a high-scoring game. The use of AI in pitch reporting represents a step forward for cricket broadcasting and fan engagement, merging traditional pitch reading with real-time technology for greater accuracy and excitement.

With this innovation, the ICC is not just modernizing match coverage — it's setting a precedent for how AI might enhance decision-making, strategy, and analysis in cricket in the years to come.
