Former Australian cricketer and former Pakistan Test team coach Jason Gillespie is reportedly set to become the head coach of the Pakistan Super League’s newest franchise, Hyderabad. The development was initially reported by a local sports journalist on social media and later confirmed when Gillespie retweeted the news on his official account.

Jason Gillespie, a former Australian fast bowler, has extensive coaching experience in county cricket and domestic leagues. He was appointed head coach of Pakistan’s men’s Test team in April 2024 by the Pakistan Cricket Board but resigned in December 2024 due to disagreements with PCB management. His tenure was marked by behind-the-scenes tensions, and he later publicly criticized the board over communication and decision-making issues. Gillespie also briefly served as interim head coach of Pakistan’s limited-overs team after Gary Kirsten’s departure in 2024.

This move marks Gillespie’s return to Pakistan cricket in a franchise capacity, just months after leaving the national team setup. The Pakistan Super League, launched by the PCB in 2016, is one of the leading T20 leagues globally, regularly featuring top international and domestic players, and attracting high-profile overseas coaches and support staff.

The 11th edition of the PSL, scheduled to begin on March 26, will be historic as the tournament expands to eight teams for the first time. Hyderabad and Sialkot are the two new franchises, with Hyderabad owned by Fawad Sarwar, who secured the franchise with a winning bid of Rs 1.75 billion ($6,247,500). Gillespie’s appointment as Hyderabad’s head coach adds significant international experience to the team ahead of their debut season.
