Indian Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has condemned the increasing politicization of cricket after reports emerged that Pakistan may boycott its match against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. Tharoor described the situation as “pretty disgraceful,” emphasizing that politics should not interfere with sports, a game loved across the region, which should unite people rather than serve as a platform for political messaging. Tharoor also criticized the controversy surrounding Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who was denied a contract with Kolkata Knight Riders, calling the decision “most unfortunate.” He noted that while the initial action was wrong, Bangladesh’s response was an overreaction, and Pakistan’s reported boycott seems to be an attempt to show solidarity, warning that the situation is “spiralling out of control.” Highlighting the dangers of mixing politics with sport, Tharoor urged immediate dialogue between all parties to prevent further escalation. He suggested that the International Cricket Council could act as a neutral platform to resolve the crisis. Tharoor stressed that cricket should bring people together on the field and called for urgent action to defuse tensions, urging stakeholders to “call off this nonsense” and restore the spirit of the game.
