Ashwin Supports Usman Tariq Amid Bowling Action Controversy Resurfacing

Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq received backing from former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin amid renewed scrutiny of his bowling action following Pakistan’s 32-run win over the United States. Tariq took three wickets for 27 runs in the match, but his pause during the run-up drew criticism from former Indian cricketer Shreevats Goswami, who likened it to football rules that prohibit pauses during penalty runs.

Ashwin defended Tariq, highlighting the discrepancy between restrictions on bowlers versus batters. He questioned why batters are allowed techniques like switch hits or reverse shots without prior notification, while bowlers face tight regulations, including limits on changing the arm of delivery without informing umpires. He noted that assessing whether a bowler exceeds the 15-degree elbow extension limit is extremely difficult for on-field umpires and suggested that a real-time, in-competition testing tool could help monitor compliance.

Ashwin emphasized that Tariq’s pause is part of his regular bowling action and falls within legal limits. He cautioned against criticizing players for exploiting grey areas in the rules, reaffirming that Tariq’s action is entirely legal. Tariq has previously been reported twice in the Pakistan Super League but was cleared on both occasions.
