Islamabad United have withdrawn West Indies fast bowler Shamar Joseph from their squad less than 24 hours after confirming his signing for the 2026 Pakistan Super League (PSL 11) season. The franchise had initially announced his acquisition following the player auction on February 11, 2026, where Joseph was reportedly picked for Rs. 1.10 crore, aimed at bolstering Islamabad United’s pace attack with international experience. The decision was swiftly reversed, with the team deleting its social media post announcing Joseph’s signing amid strong fan backlash. The franchise has not issued a detailed public explanation beyond removing the initial announcement. Joseph, who gained recognition for his high-speed bowling during international matches, including a standout Test performance against Australia at the Gabba, has been previously accused in June 2025 of rape, sexual assault, harassment, and unwanted advances by multiple women, including a teenage relative. These allegations, reported by regional Caribbean media and later internationally, have not led to formal criminal charges. On the domestic front, Islamabad United remained active in the PSL 11 auction, retaining key players such as Shadab Khan, Salman Irshad, and Andries Gous. The franchise also secured top additions including Faheem Ashraf for Rs. 8.50 crore, making him one of the highest-bid players in the auction. The release of Joseph reflects both the franchise’s sensitivity to public opinion and ongoing scrutiny surrounding player conduct ahead of the upcoming season. Go back |
