India opener Abhishek Sharma has been discharged from a Delhi hospital after treatment for an upset stomach, teammate Tilak Varma confirmed. Sharma, a key player in India’s T20 World Cup title defence, is now doubtful for Thursday’s Group A match against Namibia at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
Varma said Sharma was admitted on Tuesday following a stomach issue he had experienced since India’s opening win over United States, where he had been dismissed for a duck. “He has been discharged today and he is doing well,” Varma told reporters. “We have got one more day for the game. Hopefully, we decide by tomorrow on how he feels and we’ll go with it.”
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is expected to return for the second group match after missing the opener due to a fever. Following the Namibia match, India will travel to Colombo to face a high-profile clash against Pakistan on Sunday. The Pakistan government recently reversed a week-long boycott order that had threatened the fixture.
Varma emphasized the team’s readiness for the match against Pakistan, saying, “We were already prepared for the game even before we got to know about it a couple of days back. We are in match zone now.” Sharma’s fitness will be a key factor for India’s chances of defending their T20 World Cup title.
