OpenAI is reportedly preparing to launch its first consumer hardware product, marking a major step beyond software and artificial intelligence services. According to a Chinese tipster on Weibo, the company is developing AI-powered earbuds that will be driven by OpenAI’s own artificial intelligence model, signaling its entry into the consumer electronics market.

If launched, the product would represent OpenAI’s first hardware offering aimed at everyday users. Earlier reports had suggested that the company was experimenting with alternative device concepts, including a pendant-style wearable or a pen-like product. These ideas aligned with previous remarks by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, who described a future AI device as something more calm and less intrusive than a traditional smartphone.

Interest in OpenAI’s hardware ambitions increased further after the company brought on former Apple chief designer Jony Ive, fueling speculation about a uniquely designed AI device. However, the latest report indicates that OpenAI may have shifted its approach, opting for earbuds instead of more experimental form factors, possibly due to the rising costs and complexity of hardware development.

The earbuds are said to carry the name “Dime” and could be introduced by the end of this year, although no official confirmation has been made. Details regarding features, specifications, or pricing have not yet been disclosed.

The report also claims that OpenAI plans to release a more advanced version of the earbuds at a later stage, once supply chain constraints ease. In particular, improvements are expected after shortages of high-bandwidth memory are resolved. This type of memory plays a critical role in artificial intelligence systems by enabling fast data processing and efficient performance.
