The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has mandated that telecom operators participate in the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz spectrum bands in the upcoming 5G auction to ensure that 5G services in Pakistan are practical and provide a real user experience. While some countries have launched 5G without compulsory spectrum bands, PTA has taken a stricter approach to accelerate rollout and prevent delays in service availability. The 2600 MHz band can be used for both 4G and 5G services, whereas the 3500 MHz band is reserved exclusively for 5G. Operators may bid on other available bands, but participation in these two key bands is required to establish a functional and effective 5G ecosystem immediately after spectrum allocation, rather than limiting 5G to trials or partial coverage. PTA will hold a mock auction before the main event to test bidding software and familiarize operators with the process, including technical and procedural requirements. On auction day, all six spectrum bands will be available, with the event lasting one to three days depending on demand. Operators must submit bid documents and a USD 15 million bank guarantee by February 27, when PTA will also finalize the participating companies for the auction. Go back |
