The Senate Standing Committee on Privatization was informed that Pakistan International Airlines is expected to resume and expand its international operations, including a potential reopening of flights to the United States within this year. New international routes are being planned following improvements in operations to the United Kingdom and Europe, with the restoration of the US route seen as positive news for travelers to North America. The federal government anticipates generating total proceeds of 55 billion rupees from the privatization of PIA, which previously relied on annual bailout packages of 50 to 60 billion rupees to remain operational. The privatization process aims to address recurring losses caused by political appointments and operational inefficiencies, reducing the financial burden on the government. PIA’s assets have not been sold during privatization; instead, the airline’s liabilities are being managed to ease financial strain. Key properties, including assets at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York and the Scribe Hotel in France, remain under government ownership while efforts continue to streamline PIA’s operations and enhance profitability.
