Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is preparing to resume direct flights to the United States later in 2026, marking a major milestone for travelers to North America. Following recent improvements in operations across Europe and the UK, this development reflects PIA’s strategic push to strengthen its international network while supporting privatization efforts aimed at addressing financial inefficiencies. Restoring direct US routes will not only offer convenience for passengers but also help the airline achieve long-term financial sustainability.

According to the Secretary of the Privatization Commission, PIA has been actively planning international expansions, and resuming flights to the United States has become a top priority after stabilizing European operations. Direct flights to the US provide multiple advantages, including eliminating layovers, supporting business travel, and promoting tourism. For PIA, these routes are crucial to rebuilding international brand credibility and passenger confidence.

Privatization has been a central focus of the federal government to reduce the airline’s recurring losses, which historically required annual bailouts of Rs. 50–60 billion. By streamlining operations, reducing political interference, and addressing liabilities strategically, privatization aims to make PIA financially viable while preserving key assets such as the Roosevelt Hotel in New York and the Scribe Hotel in France. The process is expected to generate approximately Rs. 55 billion in proceeds.

Passengers are likely to benefit from improved flight reliability, higher service quality, and an expanded international network. PIA is finalizing operational logistics, aircraft allocations, and international compliance measures to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable service once US flights resume. Early bookings are expected to be in high demand, and travelers should be prepared to follow updated international travel regulations. Direct flights are anticipated from major Pakistani cities, with exact schedules to be confirmed closer to launch.

Beyond the US routes, PIA plans to expand its international footprint across Asia, Europe, and North America. Privatization will continue to play a pivotal role in improving operational efficiency, expanding fleet capacity, enhancing partnerships with global airlines, and developing revenue streams beyond ticket sales, including cargo and hospitality services.

The resumption of direct flights to the United States represents a new era for Pakistan International Airlines, highlighting a commitment to better services, financial sustainability, and competitive global connectivity for Pakistani travelers.
