Starting February 25, 2026, all visa-free travelers to the United Kingdom must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization before boarding flights. This requirement applies to stays of up to six months and covers England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, as well as the Crown Dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man. Airlines will verify ETAs prior to departure, and travelers without authorization will be denied boarding. The UK government has also increased the ETA fee to £20, approximately $27. The Electronic Travel Authorization is valid for two years or until the traveler’s passport expires and allows multiple entries without reapplying during its validity period. Applications are fully digital and can be submitted through the UK ETA mobile app or the official GOV.UK website. Authorities recommend submitting applications at least three working days before travel to ensure approval. The ETA system helps UK border officials pre-screen travelers by collecting personal, passport, and background information. Similar electronic travel authorization systems are already in place in the United States, Canada, and Australia, and the European Union is developing a comparable system. Certain travelers are exempt, including British and Irish citizens, some legal residents of Ireland, and transit passengers who do not pass through UK passport control. Since the UK ETA system launched in October 2023, nearly 20 million authorizations have been issued, and the number is expected to rise sharply once enforcement begins in 2026. Travelers are advised to apply early, budget for the fee, and comply with all regulations to avoid travel disruptions. Go back |
