UAE Introduces New Eligibility Requirement for Remote Working Visa

The UAE has opened applications for its Remote Working Visa, giving foreign professionals the opportunity to live in the country while continuing to work for employers based overseas. The visa allows a one-year stay and can be renewed as long as applicants continue to meet the eligibility criteria. One of the main benefits of this program is that applicants do not need a local sponsor or a job with a UAE-based company, as the scheme is designed specifically for remote workers employed outside the country.

To qualify, applicants must show proof of ongoing employment with a foreign employer and demonstrate stable income. From January 27, 2026, the UAE has introduced an important update to the requirements, making it mandatory to submit bank statements covering the last six months instead of three. This change effectively increases the minimum employment verification period to six months, as salary deposits are used to confirm income consistency and financial stability.

Applicants must also meet the minimum salary threshold set by UAE authorities and provide clear evidence of regular income through official bank statements. Additional requirements include valid UAE health insurance and an official letter from the employer confirming permission to work remotely from within the UAE. These measures aim to ensure compliance while offering flexibility to international professionals.

The application process is straightforward and can be completed online from inside or outside the UAE. In Abu Dhabi, applications can also be processed through accredited typing centers. The government fee is approximately 81 US dollars, excluding the costs of medical tests and the Emirates ID. Most applications are processed within five to seven working days, making it a relatively quick option for eligible professionals.

Holders of the Remote Working Visa are allowed to sponsor residence permits for immediate family members, including spouses, children, and parents, subject to standard residency regulations. This makes the visa appealing for professionals seeking a stable lifestyle with their families while maintaining overseas employment.

The initiative reflects the UAE’s broader strategy to attract global talent without adding pressure to the local job market. Remote workers contribute to the economy by living and spending locally while earning income from abroad. The program builds on Dubai’s Virtual Working Program launched in 2020 and aligns with similar initiatives introduced by countries such as Estonia, Barbados, and Cyprus.

Authorities caution that working remotely in the UAE without the appropriate visa can result in fines, tax issues, or immigration penalties. The Remote Working Visa offers a clear legal framework for professionals to work from the country without such risks. With updated requirements coming into effect in 2026, prospective applicants are encouraged to prepare their documents early, as the UAE Remote Working Visa continues to stand out as an attractive option for professionals seeking flexibility, legality, and access to a global hub.
