At least ten people, including the shooter, were killed in one of Canada’s deadliest recent mass shootings at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Police said the assailant, described as female, opened fire at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Tuesday, killing six inside the school, two at a nearby residence, and another person en route to hospital. Two others were critically injured, and up to 25 sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities said the shooter died from a self-inflicted injury, and no additional suspects are believed to be involved.

The remote town, home to around 2,400 people, saw its school placed on lockdown for over two hours while police secured the site. Students and staff were evacuated safely once the area was declared secure. British Columbia Premier David Eby called the violence “unimaginable,” while public safety minister Nina Krieger praised the rapid response by the local RCMP detachment, noting it likely saved lives.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed devastation over the attack, postponing planned announcements and international travel in response. Officials said the school will remain closed for the week, and counselling will be offered to affected students and families.

The shooting is among the deadliest in Canadian history, recalling the 2020 Nova Scotia rampage, which left 22 dead, and the 1989 École Polytechnique shooting in Montreal, which killed 14 female students.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar extended condolences to Canada, expressing sympathy for the families and wishing a swift recovery for those injured.
