Mexican President Sheinbaum Says U.S. Military Intervention Unlikely Despite Trump Pressure

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that a U.S. military intervention in Mexico is highly unlikely, despite former President Donald Trump repeatedly suggesting it during phone calls with her. Speaking at her daily press briefing, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico has firmly rejected any such request, citing the country’s sovereignty and the lack of necessity for foreign troops on Mexican soil.

Trump has previously indicated that military action could be needed to tackle drug cartels operating in Mexico. Over the weekend, he remarked that the U.S. “would have to do something” about the drug situation in Mexico. Sheinbaum, however, stressed that Mexico is already cooperating with the U.S. on combating drug trafficking and ensuring security, without compromising its independence.

Sheinbaum reaffirmed that Mexico remains a free and sovereign nation where the people govern, highlighting that cooperation with other countries is welcome, but subordination or foreign intervention is unacceptable. The comments come amid ongoing U.S.-Mexico discussions on border security and cross-border criminal activity.
