Donald Trump has said he is very serious about the United States taking control of Greenland, linking the issue to recent developments involving Venezuela and arguing that the Arctic island is critical for national and global security. He claims Greenland is strategically important not only for the safety of the United States but also for the protection of Europe, describing it as vital for future military and geopolitical stability. Trump has suggested the U.S. needs Greenland regardless of whether the island’s residents support the idea, and has also issued warnings to other countries including Colombia, Mexico and Cuba as part of a broader foreign policy posture.

European leaders have strongly rejected these statements, warning that any move against Greenland would have serious consequences for international security. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has stressed that Greenland is part of the NATO alliance and that any attack on it would be treated as an attack on NATO itself, potentially undermining global security arrangements established after World War Two. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has also condemned the remarks, calling them unacceptable and reaffirming that Greenland belongs to its people and is not for sale.
