WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump’s aides met Thursday at the White House with representatives from Denmark and Greenland as the administration explores options to bring the Arctic territory under U.S. control, a Danish official said. Denmark’s Ambassador Jesper Moller Sorensen and Greenland’s chief representative in Washington, Jacob Isbosethsen, attended the meeting at the White House National Security Council, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The White House has not independently confirmed the discussions. The meeting comes after Trump indicated that the United States is considering a range of options for acquiring Greenland, including purchase or military measures, citing the territory’s strategic importance for national security. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to meet with Danish officials in Washington next week to discuss the issue further. Greenland’s leadership has repeatedly emphasized that the territory does not wish to become part of the United States. European allies, including major powers and Canada, have voiced strong support for Greenland’s autonomy, warning that any U.S. attempt to seize the island would strain NATO relations and heighten tensions between Trump and European leaders. The discussions underscore the geopolitical significance of Greenland in the Arctic region, both for security and resource considerations. Go back |
