Turkey Offers to Help Mediate Rising US-Iran Tensions: Source

Turkey has said it is ready to play a constructive role in easing tensions between the United States and Iran as Tehran’s top diplomat prepares to visit Ankara. A Turkish foreign ministry source said Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will convey to his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi that Turkey supports resolving the current standoff through dialogue and diplomatic engagement.

At the same time, Turkish authorities are assessing contingency plans along the country’s eastern border in case of a potential US military attack on Iran. A senior official stated that if such an attack were to take place and lead to instability inside Iran, Turkey would implement additional measures to strengthen border security. These steps are being considered due to concerns over regional spillover, displacement risks and security challenges.

Washington has not ruled out further military action against Tehran following Iran’s recent crackdown on protests, which human rights groups say has resulted in thousands of deaths. The United States has also deployed a naval force led by an aircraft carrier to Middle Eastern waters, underlining heightened military readiness in the region.

Turkey, a NATO member that shares a 530-kilometre border with Iran, has consistently opposed military operations targeting its neighbour. Officials note that while a 380-kilometre border wall is already in place, it has proven insufficient under potential crisis scenarios. Rather than establishing a buffer zone, Ankara is focusing on reinforcing its frontier by expanding technological surveillance systems and increasing troop deployments to ensure border stability and national security.
