For the first time in recorded history, researchers suggest that Generation Z may show lower cognitive performance than Millennials, according to long-term academic data. Neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath attributes this decline to constant use of smartphones, tablets, and digital learning tools, which may impair problem-solving, reading comprehension, memory, mathematics, and sustained attention. Academic records spanning 200 years reveal that, despite longer schooling, Gen Z’s performance has dropped compared to previous generations. Horvath told the US Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee that growing up with uninterrupted internet access at home and in classrooms has shifted learning away from deep thinking and human interaction. The study raises concerns over educational technology, emphasizing that rapid, screen-based consumption encourages skimming rather than focused, long-term learning.
