Pro-Israel political groups affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) spent more than $55 million on candidates who ultimately lost their races in the 2026 US midterm elections, according to an analysis by the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. The amount represents nearly two-thirds of the total spending by AIPAC-linked groups, which collectively disbursed about $84.1 million through AIPAC, its United Democracy Project super PAC and other committees.
The midterm elections, held on November 3, resulted in Democrats winning control of both chambers of Congress, marking a significant political shift in Washington. The outcome is seen as a costly setback for the lobbying group’s campaign strategy, which heavily focused on supporting candidates favorable to Israel and opposing those critical of American support for the country.
Despite the losses, AIPAC’s political network also secured victories. The organization stated that more than 234 candidates it supported across both political parties won their respective contests. The mixed results highlight the complexities of electoral spending and the varying effectiveness of lobbying efforts in different races.
The Quincy Institute’s analysis underscores the scale of spending by AIPAC-linked groups, with the majority directed toward unsuccessful campaigns. This development comes amid ongoing debates over the influence of lobbying groups in US politics and the role of money in elections.
The shift in congressional control could have implications for future US policy toward Israel, as the new Democratic majority may include members more critical of unconditional support. However, AIPAC’s continued ability to back winning candidates across party lines suggests its influence remains significant.
The election results and spending patterns will likely be scrutinized by political analysts and advocacy groups as debates over campaign finance and foreign policy influence continue.
