BYD's ambitious electric hypercar, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme, has been involved in a high-speed crash during testing in China, according to videos and images that surfaced on November 2. The incident occurred on a closed track when the vehicle deviated from its intended line and struck a barrier, causing extensive damage including the complete separation of the rear axle.

Despite the severity of the impact, the driver reportedly escaped without serious injuries and was able to exit the vehicle unassisted. The central passenger compartment remained relatively intact, and no battery fire was reported following the accident. The exact purpose of the test run has not been officially confirmed, but reports suggest it may have been part of BYD's efforts to exceed the 500 km/h barrier. The speed at the time of the crash has also not been disclosed.

The U9 Xtreme previously achieved a top speed of 496.22 km/h (308.3 mph) at the Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in Germany, a run that BYD describes as placing the car at the top of global automotive top-speed rankings. Following that record, the company's testing team concluded that the car still had additional performance available, prompting BYD to pursue the symbolic 500 km/h (310.7 mph) threshold.

BYD had already announced plans for another top-speed attempt in November 2026, with Executive Vice President Stella Li stating that the company wanted the U9 Xtreme to exceed 500 km/h. Dubai was identified as the intended location, though BYD had not publicly confirmed the exact road, permissions, or final date for the attempt as of late October. The crash underscores the risks involved in pushing automotive technology to its limits.

The Yangwang U9 Xtreme, priced at $3 million, represents BYD's push into the ultra-high-performance electric vehicle segment. While the crash is a setback, the company's commitment to breaking the 500 km/h barrier remains clear. As testing continues, the industry will be watching closely to see how BYD addresses the challenges of high-speed performance and safety.
