Evacuation Begins in Ukrainian City Oleshky Under Melania-Brokered Ceasefire
A temporary ceasefire brokered by First Lady Melania Trump has enabled the evacuation of civilians from the devastated Ukrainian city of Oleshky, where residents have reportedly been surviving by eating grass.

A large-scale evacuation and aid operation is underway in the war-torn Ukrainian city of Oleshky, located in the Russian-occupied Kherson region, following a temporary ceasefire mediated by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump. The city, situated about five miles behind the front lines, has been on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, with reports indicating that some locals have been reduced to eating grass to survive.
The ceasefire, which took effect on Tuesday, is set to expire at 10:59 p.m. Kyiv time on Sunday. It was established after Melania Trump and a representative engaged directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms of the localized truce. In a post on X, the First Lady announced that a convoy of 25 buses, 50 medical professionals, and ambulances is prepared to evacuate more than 750 people who voluntarily choose to leave the city.
Relief efforts from both sides of the conflict have been mobilized to deliver food, clean water, medicine, and other essential supplies to Oleshky, where the pre-war population of roughly 20,000 has dwindled to an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 residents. The evacuation route is planned to pass through Russia and its ally Belarus before reaching Ukrainian-controlled territory, but some residents have expressed concerns about their final destination and fear they may not be allowed to continue through the route.
Ukrainian authorities have accused Russian forces of holding residents hostage and using them as human shields, a claim that Russia denies. Russia's human-rights commissioner, Yana Lantratova, stated in a video from the city on Friday that people wishing to leave for either Russia or Ukraine would be given the opportunity, and that boarding was proceeding gradually.
The humanitarian mission represents a rare moment of cooperation amid the ongoing conflict. In her post on X, Melania Trump expressed hope that the operation would "end the suffering and begin a new chapter of durable peace between Russia and Ukraine." The evacuation is seen as a critical step to alleviate the suffering of civilians trapped in the war zone, though challenges remain as the ceasefire deadline approaches.
International observers are closely monitoring the evacuation process, emphasizing the need for safe passage and protection of civilians. The situation in Oleshky underscores the broader humanitarian crisis caused by the war, with many areas facing severe shortages of basic necessities. The success of this operation could pave the way for further humanitarian initiatives, but much depends on the adherence to the ceasefire and the willingness of all parties to prioritize civilian safety.
