Iran Offers Plan to Reopen Hormuz, End War Within One Week

Iran has presented a proposal to the United States aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, stated Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during media engagements in New York.

Araghchi explained that if specific conditions are satisfied, the strait could be reopened and negotiations would begin. He made these remarks while attending the UN General Assembly, speaking to several outlets including The New York Times and The Guardian.

Japanese news agency Kyodo was the first to report the proposal, citing a senior Iranian official on Tuesday. Despite this, Iranian media denied the Kyodo report, and authorities in Tehran have not offered further clarification.

Araghchi’s plan reportedly includes a seven-day cessation of all hostilities in the Middle East, including Lebanon, the release of at least $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets, removal of sanctions on Iranian oil, and the end of the US naval blockade. The strait would reopen on the seventh day if these conditions are met.

The Iranian foreign minister noted that he is awaiting a response from the US on the proposal, and stated that China has expressed support. Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently in the United States for meetings with President Donald Trump.

In a separate interview with AFP, Hossein Mohebi, spokesperson for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, said that resolving the conflict in Yemen is also among Iran's demands.

Earlier, in June, the US and Iran had signed the Islamabad memorandum of understanding to end hostilities and reopen the strait, but the agreement failed after Iran fired on commercial ships it alleged had breached the approved route. Iran requires advance authorisation for ships passing through Hormuz and often targets non-compliant vessels, while the US at times retaliates with attacks on Iranian coastal positions.
