PM Shehbaz Sharif Denounces Houthi Attacks on Makkah at UNGA

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday, where he strongly condemned recent attacks by the Houthi movement against Saudi Arabia, specifically targeting Makkah.

During his speech, Prime Minister Sharif stated that further attacks on the Islamic holy city would represent a "red line" for Pakistan. He said, "We once again condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the recent deplorable attacks by the Houthis against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia." He added that any threat to the safety and sanctity of Makkah "is a red line that must never be crossed," emphasizing that "no Muslim can even dare to think of committing such a heinous (act)."

Pakistan maintains relations with Iran, which supports the Houthi movement, but has close strategic ties with Saudi Arabia. Last month, Pakistan entered into a defense agreement with both Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Riyadh accused the Houthis last week of targeting Makkah with a drone for the first time since 2017, although the Houthis have denied the accusation. Saudi officials reported intercepting Houthi ballistic missiles on Thursday, after warnings were issued for several regions, including Makkah.

The latest incidents come amid an escalation in Houthi attacks since July, following the breakdown of a years-long truce in Yemen.
