The United States Embassy in Moscow issued an urgent security alert on Thursday, warning of a "credible threat" of a mass casualty event at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, a prominent tourist attraction in the Russian capital. The alert, posted on the embassy's website and social media channels, specifically mentioned the museum reserve located at Dolskaya Ulitsa 1, Moscow, and urged American citizens to remain vigilant.

According to the embassy statement, the US government is coordinating with Russian authorities regarding the threat. "The U.S. Embassy in Moscow is aware of a credible threat of a mass casualty event TODAY October 31, at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve," the alert read. It advised Americans in Russia to avoid the area and crowds, stay alert, and keep their cellphones charged in case of an emergency.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) confirmed it had received information from US partners about plans for a terrorist attack in Moscow. "We have received information from U.S. partners regarding plans for a terrorist attack in Moscow. We are taking appropriate action," the FSB said, according to The Moscow Times. Following the warning, Russian law enforcement temporarily closed the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve and restricted access to the surrounding park, RIA news agency reported.

The Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, founded in 1775 as a summer residence for Empress Catherine II, is one of Moscow's most visited sites. The sprawling palace grounds cover roughly 1,000 acres south of the city center and attracted over two million visitors in 2022, according to Deputy Mayor Natalya Sergunina. The closure underscores the seriousness with which Russian authorities are treating the threat.

This is not the first time the US has warned of impending attacks in Russia. In March 2024, the US Embassy issued a warning that "extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts." Two weeks later, on March 22, gunmen attacked the Crocus City Hall concert venue, killing more than 140 people and wounding hundreds. That attack, claimed by an affiliate of the Islamic State, remains the deadliest in Russia in years.

The latest warning comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and the West, but cooperation on counterterrorism intelligence appears to continue. The embassy's alert did not provide further details on the nature of the threat or the potential perpetrators. American citizens in Russia are advised to monitor local media for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities.
