Airbnb has confirmed it is building an AI-powered travel agent designed to help users plan and book trips directly on its platform, with the company targeting a launch in the first half of 2027. The project was disclosed in Airbnb's Q3 2026 shareholder letter, following a series of AI features the company rolled out across 2026 for search, listing descriptions and customer support.

The tool differs from conventional travel chatbots in how it presents information. Rather than replying inside a standard chat window, the agent draws on a library of hundreds of travel-specific components, including maps, photos, comparisons, calendars and itineraries, and assembles them in real time into an interface tailored to each user's questions and requirements.

Airbnb says the agent is meant to support the way people actually plan trips, letting travellers explore options, reach decisions together with their companions and complete a booking without leaving the platform. Over time, the company intends to extend the experience to cover whole journeys, bundling accommodation, services and experiences into a single place.

The travel agent extends a set of AI tools Airbnb has already introduced for guests. These include natural-language search, AI-powered filters, automatically generated listing descriptions and side-by-side AI comparisons of homes saved to wishlists. According to the company, these features have laid the groundwork for a more capable planning assistant.

Airbnb argues that its existing booking infrastructure gives it an edge over third-party AI travel agents. The platform already manages payments, reservation changes, refunds, rebooking and round-the-clock safety support, which means its agent can act on these services directly rather than handing users off to another system.

The announcement signals a broader push among travel platforms to move beyond simple search and into assisted trip planning. Airbnb expects to begin rolling out the new agent in the first half of 2027, with further details on availability expected closer to launch.
