GTA 6 Could Save You $5,000? Debate Erupts Over Cost-Per-Hour Value of Gaming

A viral video claims buying GTA 6 for $99.99 could save $5,000 in entertainment costs, but the math hinges on assumptions about playtime and nightlife spending.

A claim by British finance YouTuber Mark Tilbury that purchasing Grand Theft Auto VI could save gamers $5,000 (approximately Rs. 1.38 million) has sparked discussion online. In a video posted on Instagram on October 31, Tilbury argued that the game's cost per hour of entertainment is far lower than a typical night out. The game is set to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Tilbury based his calculation on the Ultimate Edition priced at $99.99. Assuming 80 hours to complete the main story, the cost works out to about $1.25 per hour. With side missions and exploration, he estimates the cost drops to around 50 cents per hour. He then posited that spending four hours every evening on the game would provide 50 nights of entertainment. Compared to going out, where he claims a person could easily spend $100 per night, those 50 nights would cost $5,000. 'That's why buying GTA 6 actually saves you $5,000,' he said.

However, the 50-cent figure relies on the game delivering roughly 200 hours of playtime—four hours a night for 50 nights—which is Tilbury's own estimate, not an official figure from Rockstar Games. Additionally, the $99.99 price applies to the Ultimate Edition, which includes premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and in-game businesses. The Standard Edition costs $79.99, as revealed in Rockstar's pre-order announcement earlier this year.

Converting to Pakistani rupees at the interbank rate of Rs. 276.76 per dollar (October 29 close), the Standard Edition comes to about Rs. 22,138, while the Ultimate Edition is roughly Rs. 27,673, before bank charges or taxes on international card payments. Using Tilbury's assumptions, the Standard Edition is even cheaper per hour: about $1 (Rs. 277) per hour at 80 hours, and around 40 cents (Rs. 111) per hour at 200 hours.

The $5,000 figure is also a gross number. Subtracting the game's cost ($99.99), the net saving would be about $4,900 (roughly Rs. 1.36 million), and that only holds if a player would otherwise have spent $100 on each of those 50 nights. For most Pakistani households, a $100 night out (about Rs. 27,676) is unusually high, so the actual 'saving' depends on individual spending habits.

Pre-orders and purchases made before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders come with a free month of GTA+. Digital pre-orders can be pre-loaded starting November 12. Physical copies will only contain a download code, with no disc. The game's pricing and pre-order details were previously reported by ProPakistani in June.
